1860 Frankfurt thaler. But what is that black stuff? Looks like more than just toning/tarnish. Fire damage? Love my coin, and usually love toning, but hate the black stuff. thoughts?
I call that tarnished Possibly the coin was in a coin holder, the protective film was not intact, letting air pass through certain places. The copper in sterling, when it comes in contact with oxygen, tends to create the darkening effect that ruins the look of many pieces. I had this bad experience with many coins. In the future check your coins holders.
I know this is heresy, but do you think a diluted thiourea quick dip would get rid of it without stripping the rest of the patina? I'm thinking 2:1 water to dip solution.
Well since the dip will attack the toning at the same rat everywhere, the first thing to go will be the lighter attractive toning and it will all be gone before the heavy dark toning on the back lightens up.
