I got my tax refund (wooo) and am looking to spend it on some coins. Right now, I have a average type set; things I'm missing include:
- flowing hair dollar/half
- draped bust dollar

I always could use some upgrades such as the seated liberty half (details grade for one and Ag3 for other haha).

I also have an almost complete classic commemorative set, I'm missing the Hudson, Hawaii, Antietam, old Spanish trail, and Gettysburg.

From a gold type set I don't have the eagles or double eagles.

Things I'm considering:
- Seated Liberty half dollar proof (950ish)
- flowing hair half dollar (950ish)
- get two eagles (liberty and Indian head) or one double eagle
- get civil war classic commemoratives

I'm not sure which way to go. The half dollar proofs are beautiful and it would be quite an upgrade. The classic commemoratives would be nice but getting the rest would take me quite a bit of time. The gold coins are nice and they'll get me closer to set completion.

What say you all?

Personally I'd try and go for the flowing hair. But I'd also wait to find one for a good deal or til I find one that the seller under graded.

I'd say save your money and wait until summer to make acquisitions. Things are getting frothy at auctions and I suspect it's due to folks in similar circumstances. Especially toned coins. Wait until things slow down. I think you can get more bang for your buck in the summertime or around Christmas when everyone is broke.

Sounds like a fun problem to have!

I would lean towards buying one nice coin with the lump sum as it's harder to save the large sum than it is to buy multiple less expensive coins,?

Personally I'd lean towards a nice Fine flowing hair half, the Hawaiian or Spanish trail comm. , or a double eagle

Have fun deciding!

I pick up the classic commemorative coins. Pretty depressed right now. Buy low sell high!

Yeah it's hard to find problem free flowing hair dollars/half dollars. It's a big purchase though!

Part of me is leaning towards the gold. Not sure

I agree with the sentiment echoed here, no hurry!

I would go for the Flowing Hair Half, personally. Then with anything left over go for the Double Eagle.

I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed!

IMHO, gold is in a long-term downtrend. The chart reminds me of what happened in the eighties.

Buying a flowing hair is owning a piece of history. You have to be patient and find one that meets your standards. But once you get one, and take the plunge, it will be the most cherished coin in your collection.

Again, I would wait until things slow down at auctions. It's really tuff to find good deals right now.

Well, which drives you more nuts - the empty hole or the low grade?

I would look for two or three of the top coins you want.

Then buy which ever one comes along at the grade and price you want.

But wait for a problem free coin that is a good price. Try to not over pay
for a coin.
