I just got this 1840 Seated Liberty half dollar and I am noticing a bunch of circular lines on the obverse, what are these from? I do not see any reference to what these are in Bill Bugert's register book for this year?

This image is a closeup of right under the shield.

This one is in the gown to the right of the shield.

This is right above her lap and to the left of her right elbow within the gown.

Please let me know what you think this is?

If lines are incuse then cleaning may be the reason. If lines are raised then caused from die polishing.

They look like die polishing lines.

Can you post an image of the whole coin?

The lines are raised. Here is an image of the obverse.

Judging from the lighting, the lines are raised, meaning die polish lines. Also note how they go under the devices and are located in the low parts of the coin (high parts of the die).

And, as Mark points out, this coin has also been cleaned.

In the learning process, I have to ask: what points to this coin being "cleaned"?

Also, there's no need for the mystery. What is it graded?

I was going to ask the same question, how have you determined that this coin was cleaned?
When I posted the last picture I was trying to get a good picture of the coin. Here are the rest of the pictures of the coin.

Thanks for everyone's comments, this forum is helping me learn much more.

PS. I notice that when I post pictures in this forum that they are right side up but when I look at the pictures in the forum from my iPad or phone they are turned 90 degrees? Can you please let me know what you see? If they are turned then I can correct it if not then I do not know what is wrong with my phone and iPad.

Looks like that coin was cleaned long ago and has re-toned. Market acceptable. Those lines are definitely die polishing lines. Cool coin.
