I'm not a nickel collector and don't know much about them. My daughter's school had a bring-in-your-change fundraiser. Included in the bucket was a dateless, corroded Shield nickel. Is it worth it to try and nic-a-date the nickel to see if it might be a key date? It would be nice to get a couple bucks for it instead of a nickel if they turn it in at the bank.

Well, based on your description, you can't really hurt it more. Maybe you'll get a 1880.

It's probably not worth much, whatever it is, if it's that badly worn/corroded, but if you want to see if you can bring anything out, try soaking it in acetone overnight, rinse under hot water, and blot dry with a paper towel. It may take a few tries before you get any results, but sounds like you don't have much to lose. If there is a particularly stubborn area, you can also soak a q-tip in some of the acetone and work on it gently with that.

Right - turn in a Shield nickel and get accused of counterfeit coinage. A Poor girl tried to pay for lunch with a 2 dollar bill her Grandmother gave her!

If it is caked with gunk that might do something butt if it is just worn/corroded acetone won't do anything.

As it is now with no date and severely worn it's worth five to ten cents. If you can bring out a date with nic-a-date or vinegar it can't be worth any less than it is now. So you have nothing to lose.

Go to a store with a Sacabuck, a Prezbuck, a Kennedy half, and this nickel and have yourself $2.55 worth of fun.
