I thought that in 1985 they put the mint mark on the machines to stamp it. Instead of doing it manually. What happened to this one. It's sideways. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I believe mint marks were hand punched until 1989.

 Mint marks were added to working dies by hand until 1989. Their target area was below the date and to the right of the bust, so they could be almost anywhere, or upside-down, or sideways.

They stopped hand punching MM's in 1990,so 1989 was the last year for hand punching MM's. John1

The bottom of that MM looks pretty thin.. also looks like a little something inside the D at the top.. maybe RPM ? do you have a close up?

They put the mintmark on the masters in 1985 on the PROOF Master die or hub. Business strikes in 1990.
