I came across this 1971 silver non magnetic penny.
Does anyone have any idea as to why this is silver?

Paint ? Have tried dipping it in acetone ?

I have a couple chrome plated LC's from the 70's myself. Mine have some shine them, yours seems a bit flat, but that may be the photo's or plated with something different. They are fun finds though and my kids like these.

Yep looks plated, 1971 pennies are made of copper.

Looks plated,maybe mercury? Not shiny enough for chrome.

I remember a bunch of them when I was a kid going around boston area , some guys that worked at a bumber plant made a pile of them.crome plated penny's,i still have some .

It's very possible Cookie Monster that these are one
of them as well, I'm in the northern part of NH right on
the line of Mass. This penny belongs to my friend who
inherited her father in laws penny collection, so we don't
have any idea where he came across this, but had it in with
all the other wheat pennies he collected.

I agree that it appears to be plated.
Need accurate weight.
A pure silver penny of exactly the same dimensions of diameter and thickness should weigh about 20% more, and should appear much whiter.

My guess that it is zinc or nickel plated, probably a product of a high school chemical lab. experiment.

John1, is mercury possible? Any idea as to how I would tell if this is plated or mercury?

Take it to a large bullion or coin dealer that has an XRF, ask if they would xray it for you

It is possible to be plated or coated in mercury. Don't know how to tell. You Tube maybe?
