India, Saurashtra kingdom (peninsular Gujarat) C. 450-300 BC 1/4 Karshapana (0.96g) Uniface with the sacred Hindu symbol Srivatsa US dime for scale The Srivatsa is an ancient symbol for Lakshmi, consort of Vishnu, who bears this mark on his chest. Over time the symbol has evolved into a flower shape, and has also been adopted by Buddhism as the Infinite Knot that is oh-so-popular with hippie wannabes.
