Imaged this one for the "tiny coins" thread over at Main, then realized I never shared this little guy here.

India, Saurashtra kingdom (peninsular Gujarat)
C. 450-300 BC
1/4 Karshapana (0.96g)
Uniface with the sacred Hindu symbol Srivatsa

US dime for scale

Not-Your-Usual-Punchmark...-Saurashtra-1/4-Karshapana

The Srivatsa is an ancient symbol for Lakshmi, consort of Vishnu, who bears this mark on his chest. Over time the symbol has evolved into a flower shape, and has also been adopted by Buddhism as the Infinite Knot that is oh-so-popular with hippie wannabes. The coin is supposedly quite scarce, but I won it for cheap probably because there are so few collectors of these types.

I have a number of punched mark coins, but have not come across any with this mark. Very nice coin and excellent find.

That's a pretty small coin!
