I'm currently on vacation in Jordan and was recommended to go to a certain shop and they supposedly have a great reputation. I purchase a few coins and spent more than intended. I'm not an expert collector and didn't realize what I was purchasing. When I started looking in to the most expensive coin a day after purchasing I realized that I may have been taken for a ride. Could anyone tell me whether or not this coin appears to be real or a counterfeit?

Sorry to tell you, but this appears to be a cast copy of an Athens tetradrachm. This is a famous coin and one that is most copied. I hope you didn't pay a lot for it.

I'm feeling spiteful today. Get that shop, they'll just think it's another terrorist attack.

Jest sayin'.

:-( too much for a cast copy I assure you. I got nervous when I looked it up on Google and the pics I saw were off a bit from my coin and true originals were being sold for hundreds of thousands in mint condition.

Sorry you got burned! This is a documented fake (and a pretty lousy one at that, imo) of an Athens dekadrachm. Another generation of the same cast is illustrated at Forum's Fake Coin Reports.

@aaronv, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that you should try to get your money back if possible. Next time, post the pics here *before* you buy the coin (if you can).

I appreciate you guys chiming in on this. My guide assures me that the shop will refund my money so we are going to do that today. I'll post first and purchase second next time around.
