1954-S Jeffderson Nickel With A Strange Mint Mark

I was checking over all my old Jeffersons when I found this.

1954-S-Jeffderson-Nickel-With-A-Strange-Mint-Mark 1954-S-Jeffderson-Nickel-With-A-Strange-Mint-Mark

Took some flashing in the light to realize this is actually an S and not a P. As you can see, the coin has some pretty nice details, probably XF, so I wouldn't expect the mintmark to be so worn

So it appears the mintmark is really weak and filled in. Is this a special variety or just common die wear?
