I found this coin metal detecting in Southeast Missouri. It is just a hair bigger than a half dollar. I have exhausted all of my research tools in trying to date this coin. If anyone can help and maybe give the back story of the coin.

Much appreciation in advance

Thanks for the nice welcome!

I saw that one as well before I posted. I also found one with both Washington and Lee bust together. Neither of the 2 I found showed a date or any back story.
I am not sure if this will help or create doubt but....Along side this item I found 3 other tokens that were all different. I also found a Key for old amusement game doors. Seems someone thought it was all treasure and buried it....Just a guess of course. Still trying to date the other tokens and the key but not much available on them.

Thanks again for the help and your time

Greg, sorry that I couldn't have been more helpful with that token. If you really want to dig into it though, consider contacting the W&L University. In their alumni affairs department, they might just have a archivist/historian or someone who could help you with a more positive identification. If you do manage to get that, please post this updated info here to close the loop.

With regard to the other tokens that you found, you should consider also posting here. Best practice is to use separate threads for each different one as some folks might be more able to help with one type of token over another.

I wrote to Washington Lee and received the response below...

Greg,
We appreciate you making contact with Washington and Lee's University Library. The history of the coin you have shared is partly a mystery to us as well. I have seen examples and believe we have one with the same reverse, but a Washington profile unique from your example. These pop up on ebay and in various online auctions from time to time. We believe they date to the early twentieth century or a bit later. Perhaps they were struck for the W&L Bicentennial commemoration in 1949 - which was quite a milestone for the university and led to the creation of all sorts of related souvenirs, including fine China and first day issue stamps. Here's a link to similar medal online http://tokencatalog.com/token_recor...on_id=346887
This one is by "Whitehead and Hoag." The name lasted between 1892 and 1965, though they were bought out in 1959.

Hope this gives you at least some new information.
Happy Hunting!
