I know very little about this but I was wondering if the given attribution is correct. Listed as:

@spruett001, I recommend PMing CCF member drnsreedhar about your coin. He doesn't usually hang out here in the ancient coin section, but is super-knowledgeable about Indian coins, including this post of his for the Juanpur Sultantate:

It was bought for How Far Back Can We Go, right?

Looking at the linked thread, definitely looks like a match to me (especially the #1 Billon), but while the date does look like a 896 here (and 897 on the coin in the thread), as far as I can tell, the Jaunpur Sultanate didn't exist in 1491 AD, unfortunately.

Waiting for the comment from dmsreedhar!

EDIT: based on Zeno examples, apparently those are known with even later dates, so 896 AH may be right. Why would they continue to mint coins in the name of a long-deposed ruler, I have no idea, but whatever.

@january1may

You caught me. I was wondering who would catch on first.

I am also confused about the coin date being after the Sultan's reign (death). From what I understand though, Husain Shah was the last of the Jaunpur rulers. I don't pressume to understand why this coin was made in his name years after.

Gut feeling tells me it's not the first time it's happened.

Edit: it's not "bought" but in the sights, so to speak.

Hello spruett001,
Your coin has clear legend reading "Ibrahim shah, Mahmud shah and Hussain shah". That fixes it to Hussain.
I have placed an overlay.

Is-This-Indian-Coin-Attributed-Correctly?

Regarding the date it must be 869.AH.His coins with such bizarre dates are often met with. Here is another example

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...sen2_opt.jpg

The date can be read as "897" but it should be "879"

In fact, the Sultanate was permanently taken over in 890.AH by the Delhi ruler and Barbak shah was placed on charge. So no posthumous issues of Hussen shah is known.
Thanks

Thank you so much drnsreedhar!

I could make out the legend with the help of the topic of yours that Spence linked to. I just had no idea of the date. I see now how the date positioning lends to it being misread and 869 AH makes a lot more sense.

Oh well, I'll keep hunting for a 1491 AD coin. I got outbid on this one anyway. It's still an interesting coin, though.
