Just recently got into coin collecting more seriously, never really appreciated coin Quality until I purchased a metal detector several months ago to give me something different to do when I came down with ross river virus. After I got the metal detector home and was testing testing it in my childhood backyard, I started to recall burying a jar of 1 and 2 cent coins, maybe had penny's too. I recalled my friend and I discussing how deep to dig the hole and forgot all about it till that moment #128559;.
After numerous attempts with what now emulates the diggings of the gold fields in its early days, I still haven't found my coins lol but my garden soil is well aerated. My friend vaguely recalls the memory of assisting me in coin burial but has been of little assistance, All I can think is the plumbers had discovered my loot and thought they were rich or my detector is not good enough!
Anyway I went to Malaysia and Thailand in 2015 and was fascinated by their coins and notes, though I didn't know anything much about them until recently and the coins I got I've realized they are pretty common though still unique to me. I've been to USA in 2000 for three months, though didn't really take an interest as just turned 21 and was young and dumb. Not much has changed except for my age hahaha. My brothers have travelled around Europe a lot, one for about 10 years after the euro came in, but I didn't even think to ask about getting me coins.
Last year I was starting to eagerly browse through my change and putting aside any foreign coins that I received whilst shopping, mostly Fíji, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, along with the odd English and UAE coins dispensed by the self serve machines at the supermarkets. Though they are pretty common coins and not valuable.
So I've been looking up about collecting coins, having now got my parents very interested in reporting to me news reports of valuable coins and sparking my intrigue further. So I jumped on
ebay for a browse and went into a buying frenzy getting all sorts of predecimal coins which I had no idea what size they were until 100x 3d arrived, but I learnt pretty fast from then doing a bit of research, as I'd got really sick and laying in bed resting mostly and waiting to get over the worst of the virus. Still getting my feet back on the ground, but coin collecting is keeping me sane while I get through this period.
I've only got a small collection of coins so far, though just using it as a hobby for now. My late uncle collected Australian decimal coins and some bank notes, though his collection doesn't seem particularly valuable or managed well. I plan to buy myself some coin storage boxes, coin plastic slip sheets, different size coin holders, a decent scale, maybe some tubes for my lower grade Australian predecimal and decimal coins and keep learning more about coin collecting.
