I was almost floored when I looked at this coin. I seriously thought it was a new 2017 from the shine. But it turned out to be a 1959. But the question is the C in America looks to be incomplete. From the 50's coins I've looked the C was more complete. Is this an error or just normal for this year. Thanks for any and all advice!

Kinda looks like a proof coin. The C is most likely over polishing at the mint.

Here is a proof 1959 large image.

Not sure if yours is a proof or not. The area above 'MO' on Monticello (2nd image)that maybe flat field doubling? But the third and fourth image doesn't show that. It maybe just a nice coin.

Thanks guys. Coop I think the image you shared shows somewhat of the same C. Also it looks like it had something also going on under the west side of the building. However not as noticeable as my coin.Anyway this is a great find! At least to me!

I always look at the rims when it comes to more modern proofs. ( Of course, I have no classic proofs anyway )

I'm pretty sure that is a proof... I posted a thread a few days back with a nickel that looked exactly the same in that area.. missing bottom part of the "C" and the left leg of the "A" is very thin.. almost gone

I see these too, from time to time. I don't think it's an Impaired Proof, it would be "smudgy" that wouldn't come off. It's just a beautiful coin, made when something went accidentally right at the mint (excluding the Over-Polished Die Error). That's my opinion, but right or wrong, it's a nice find.

What do you mean by "smudgy"? LOL .. The example I posted is a proof.. from a proof set I opened.. so either newbie's is an impaired proof from the same die or ? Did the mint use proof dies to do business strikes when they were done with proof striking back in the 50's? If so, maybe it is a business strike made on a reused proof die? Possibly explain why it looks so nice?

You may be right Msexauer, the over-polishing is very similar to yours. Maybe Newbie's coin hasn't been in circulation very long. I have found that most impaired proofs are permanently smudged from circulation.(Smudgies)
