This is one of those cases where I WISH I WAS THERE!! I was in the bank where I do most of my coin roll dumping today. All of the tellers in there are great; we all get along well. One of the tellers said to me, "I wish that you were here yesterday, you might have been able to help this guy that came in. He brought me this coin, and asked if I could give him twenty dollars for it." He claimed it came from behind a fireplace that was ripped off the wall during renovations of his father's house. After a few questions from me to her, I determined that the coin was a St Gaudens $20. It was a 1907! She said she got onto ebay and saw a 1908 for sale (she said there were no 1907 coins for sale), and it was going for about $800. She also said it was very dark, and needed to be cleaned.

She did the right thing and told him that he should go to a coin shop with it. She could give him $20, but it wouldn't be right. I asked her if she had got the chance to hold it. She said, "yes, it was such an impressive coin! Extra thick with all of the detail practically jumping off of it!" At this point my heart skipped a beat, and I asked her if the date was in Arabic or Roman numerals. She immediately replied, "It was Roman numerals" If that coin was real (and IMO it probably was, considering the story of where it came from) it was a High Relief 1907. 10K in VF! Again, I WISH I HAD BEEN THERE! I would have loved to see it! But, now I'll never know!

Interesting story if the coin was real. I wonder if it was a counterfeit and the person was trying to get $20 for it, hoping that some greedy teller would buy into the scam? I think if most people found that coin, the first thing they would assume that it is gold/or research it on ebay. How many times do people find an "old coin" like an Indian penny from 1900 and think it's worth millions? While all of this is possible that it was true, I doubt it.
