Hi I was thinking about buying this coin in the pic. It just says 1922 Grant on the label. But it clearly has a star. Is it something they missed adding to the label? Don't they return it ungradeable if it is a fake? Any thought? (this is not my picture so I cut out the serial # and barcode) Thanks in advance. Rob

You would need to check if there is a different coin # for the star version. If there is, contact customer service and ask if they'll fix it as a mechanical error. If the right # wasn't specified on the invoice, then you'll have to resubmit.

I would call NGC and see what can be done. Either they will fix it or resubmit.

Here is a closer picture of the Star. I typed the nu,ber into NGC's website and it was the exact same picture & coin. Just seemed like a huge miss on their part. Also the number you mentioned, is that like the last 3 digits? I have looked at Grant stars graded the same and the numbers are all different.

VAMmers have a solid answer to that question. I'll let you wonder what that would be

The last three numbers on a NGC slab refer to the numerical order the coin is listed on your submission form
124556(form #)- 016 ( sixteenth coin line on form)
Has nothing to do with series or number within series
If you can get it for no star price it would be a bargain, the. Resubmit to get correct label, you can't loose If you get it priced as a no star

Quote: There is a different coin number for the star version. I was referring to NGC's internal coin numbers, not the numbers on the slab. What I was trying to convey was that if they used the correct number, then the word "star" would appear on the label.

Right, 19306 vs 19307... whopping difference in value too.

It's an authentic Grant - Star and concur that somehow NGC missed the variety.
Certainly worth more $ in today's market than the 'standard' Grant ... but you made no mention of price so I am unable to offer an opinion on value.

Sorry have not been on much, was at hospital. 490 was price on it. Seemed to still be a lot cheaper than other lightly cleaned Grant Stars.

It's not 'lightly cleaned' that might be market acceptable, it's improperly cleaned (with a Brillo pad). Retail value AU is 100-110 as marked, 900-1000 with star. For a details coin? What are you comfortable at? It sold for $494 http://www.ebay.com/itm/292121947538) with 25 bidders, so several people liked it... There is a NGC AU53 on ebay today with zero bids starting at 674.
