Would this be a small date over a large date?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not seeing the small date... I think all of the small/large dates from Philadelphia are on proof coins

Normal large date cent. There is a lot of circulation damage on the coin.

I believe lawest is correct. For business strikes, the Denver minted cents are the ones to look at.

Circulation damage is what happens when the coin is used. It gets dinged and banged around in pockets and purses, generally beat up against other coins.

This circulation damage leaves indents on the coin because of the coin contacting other things. Sometimes the devices get rounded or altered in shape from strong contact. The longer the coin is in circulation the more hits the coin takes. Evetually the coin wear also is noticed and the devices start to round over/flatten.
