2 mates and I are driving from Vancouver Island to Ottawa for Canada Day. I am hoping to stop at as many coin shops as possible (I love digging through junk bins).

Looking for any recommendations along Hwy 1 as well as the Toronto area.

Thanks!
Cale

If/when you're in Winnipeg there's three shops that have regular hours..

1) Gatewest coins - a really big dealer their junk bin hardly has things that interest me, mostly just pocket change from other countries.
2) Provincial coin and stamp - I don't know if Al has a junk bin but he's a really good guy to deal with, if you get him on a good day he'll show you some really cool things.
3) There's another store in town I've never delt with, I think it's in the north end of the city.

If you'd like any other info on Winnipeg like which hotels are good or restaurants feel free to send me a PM... hope you enjoy the road trip!

The drive across the prairies would be about the same but to safe a huge amount of time you would be far better off going south after winnipeg and using the interstate until Detroit and Windsor .

Great way to participate in Canada's 150th, drive through the US, heck why should they even bother to stop in Ottawa I hear there's some kind of celebration that same weekend south of the border.

1. I agree. A big box of world coins around the corner of the store.
2. Al does have a small junk bin for low grade Canadian 5 cent and large cent coins in the display case. No Queen Victoria's.
3. There are actually 2 in the north end of the city and I dealt with one of them only once, about 6 - 7 years ago.
4. If you take a stop at the "The Forks Area" in Winnipeg, try the antique store in the basement of Johnston Terminal. The store has both coins and paper currency.

In my mid-20s, myself, my youngest brother, and my best friend Jason took a road trip from Winnipeg to Vancouver in 28 hours. It could have been 26 hours, but both amateur photographers had to stop and take pictures of mountains and waterfalls. I was the one carrying their camera gear and the darn tripod.

Have an awesome road trip and best wishes.

Albern Coins in Calgary is on 16 Avenue (#1 Hwy but not the ring road). Problem is that they deal mostly in bullion and Mint non circulating, and not traditional Canadian circulating coins.

Wow lots of responses

@doubleeagle59 - They've been warned, I'll make collectors out of them yet.

@torgemco - I actually work at a coin store on the island but we don't have a lot of contacts "on the mainland" I can google as well as the next guy but I'm looking for more personal recommendations, don't want to drive out of my way to visit a tiny pawn shop.

@DBM and AgCoinAu - We are staying in Canada on the way to Ottawa, like DBM said it's part of our 150 celebration for some twenty-somethings that rarely leave our island. After Canada Day we head to Boston for The 4th and drive back across the states.

@the_sifu - Thanks! Lots of Winnipeg people on here

@punman - I went to Albern to exchange some USD last summer, seemed like more of a Bullion Exchange than a coin store. Just a standing area and 2 employees behind wickets, no visible inventory.

Thanks for all the info guys, keep it coming!

cspence, you know, you will have to regale us with stories and experiences of the road trip adventure after you have completed it.

Note, if not already mentioned or discovered so far:

The Royal Canadian Mint (Winnipeg) is just off the Number 1. The Provincial Stamp and Coin store is on the Number 1.

Cheers

Sounds like an epic adventure! Be sure to stop at J & M coins in vancouver. It is about 10 minutes off the #1. You have to know what you are looking for and ask for it because their inventory is massive and mostly in the back. Not really a junk bin kinda store though. Enjoy the journey to Ottawa. The mint tour there is worth it too!

Btw...i have spent many hours going through the junk bins at "gold and silver guy" stores on the island!

Pretty great trip although I did not end up having time to pop into many coin shops. Stopped by Provincial in Winnipeg but the owner was out of town. Met up with TheCoinHunter down in Brockville and Alliance coin on Canada Day.

16,000km later I'm home but without any new coins :/

You had a good, safe trip and that's more important than buying a few coins.

Sounds like an epic trip though.
