Can anyone please explain what is meant by Flat Base Crown on coin left and Curved Base Crown on coin right?

Just a guess, but the one on the right goes straight up from the lowest part of the crown, much like a cylinder.
The one on the left appears to flair out on the sides as you go up, like an inverted cone.

These two samples are regarded as Flat Base crowns:

These two samples below are regarded as Curved Base crowns.

I think the "base" would be the bottom, but I don't understand why reference books call one flat and the other curved. They look elliptical or maybe "more oval" and "less oval". Your thoughts?
