Hi all, I'm trying to figure out what these specks are on this 1955 Franklin. I bought it in the bargain bin at a local shop because, aside from the specks, the coin is in excellent shape. It's a FBL, and I don't see any marks or rubs on it with my naked eye. Even at 20x, only a handful of small marks are visible -- although the specks could be covering up additional damage that I can't see. I've not seen this on any coin before, but I'm extremely new to this so that's not saying much. :) Any ideas on what it is? Damage from past dipping? Weird toning? Something else? And how would you grade this coin based on what you can see? Thanks! Michelle

The only thing I can add at this point is that I don't think it would grade FBL.

I also do not think it is a FBL. The speckling looks like toning to me. John1

There's nothing wrong with your Franklin , It's natural toning ,the semi ugly kind . I also don't think it's FBL . Don't dip this coin ,you might not be happy with the results .

I don't think it is ugly at all,and I am not into toned coins as a general rule. John1

It might be a lighting artifact but it looks like there's a scrape on the reverse that runs into a gouge on the right side of the headstock.

I bet that's not a scratch, it looks like the picture is taken through a clear flip packet. I can see little bubbles in the plastic on the obverse image. Not the best kind of protection. Might have something to do with this pattern of toning over time. I do like the toning on the coin myself. It would be in a capsule from here on out if it were mine. 1955 is a better date too.

Thanks all for the input so far! It's very appreciated! :)
dave700x & TheNickelGuy - you're correct, that's a lighting issue from how I took the photo. I'll pay better attention in the future to minimize confusion.
It seems like the general consensus is that it's *not* FBL. Can you clarify what's missing to prevent a FBL state?
Thanks! Michelle

Agree just toning which I don't find particularly appealing. to the CCF!

Quote: Can you clarify what's missing to prevent a FBL state? Full Bell Lines is uninterrupted upper and lower lines (with the exception of the bell crack of course). It could just be your images but I'm seeing flat spots just to the left of the crack.
