There're two things I wonder about regarding this coin.

First, many (most?) nails of the period had a square cross-section. This hole is obviously round like modern mass-produced nails.

Second, was it already this well worn when nailed up, or did it actually get taken down and circulate afterwards? The edges of the hole seem a bit smoothed out.

Might have been used as a fob of some sort, zipper or door pull or similar, note the conical wear of hole. either wear nor hole made by knife tip.

Becuz it's through Britainnia's head, probably done by the Irish...

LC, if it was an Irish door pull, was probably on the...outhouse (had a lot of wear)...

It still doesn't make a lot of sense - a link of chain, say, or a brass ring as used in a harness or other tack, would work just as well (maybe even better). So why drill and use a penny in lieu of something that probably wouldn't cost more than a farthing? Unless, of course, you're making a political statement.
