I'm curious to know how this coin...

Grading-Question-On-A-Japanese-1870-1-Yen

received a grade of "MS-62" with the sort of wear that is shown here (below) in the second image (red "X"s)?...

Grading-Question-On-A-Japanese-1870-1-Yen

I can understand the presence of "bag marks" and even a weak strike, but this would appear to be definite wear to the M3 1 yen dragon image. I'm new to this game, can someone explain why this coin would qualify for a grade that doesn't allow for wear?

Any help or suggestions appreciated... Buffo M.

Just as a guess, isn't there a limit on magnifying by the graders? So if you zoom in closer, small wear may be seen that could go unseen by the graders? Or another idea might just be error. If graded by others, it may not come back as MS-62, or might even come back as MS-63. However, I really don't know about grading. I'm just looking for something to do here at my desk on my day off.

I know enough about the vagaries of grading to know I'm not too good at it.
But...
A coin with a weak strike may not fill the die and have a flat appearance in some of the high spots.
Just a possibility.

From these pictures,
I am forced to ignore the PCGS grading.
Normally, I respect the TPGrading; in most cases, my opinion differs from theirs by only a small amount.

Relative recent rubbing on the high points has denuded the patina in those high point areas.

Rubbing = wear.
I understand your reason for concern.

IF that is the case, then I grade this coin as AU58.

I reckon "Chute72" might have a valid point. It could well be the result of a "weak strike."

The "PCGS Grading Standards".pdf mentions that a "below average strike" may be present with this classification.
