I've been reading articles that say a public records request uncovered a way to identify 2015 Silver Eagles that were Struck in Philadelphia. According to the articles this makes them part of the lowest mintage of any silver eagle. According to the articles, the serial number band on the boxes has the identifier.
If this is correct, is it not likely that the actual identifiable coins from this mint in 2015 may be much lower than the approximately 80,000 quoted? Since this "discovery" wasn't made until after the coins were issued, it would seem that many were put into "circulation" before the identifier was revealed, therefore making it impossible to attribute them to the specific mint.

If it proves inaccurate (or even simply seems to be), the TPGs will simply void the special label and offer to fix the mechanical error for free (they pay return shipping).
The first the purchaser will know is when they go to look up the cert, find it "not found, contact customer service" and realize that they paid for an incorrect label.
Maybe - we should be so lucky - this kills off the stupid-label-premium-fad. Nah.

It's not a "mechanical error". The TPG's and buyers were acting on information provided by the Mint. The TPG provided a service requested by those who had an appropriate monster box AND the cash to have 500 ASE's graded and labeled. It will be an asterisk added to the stats... ...and who in their right mind would take an offer to turn a $500+ purchase into a $30 one. In reality it might have some added macabre "whoops" value after all the dust settles...not $500 macabre, but something added This mess was totally created by the Mint...

The ones in 2015(p) holders of the "mis-attributed vintage", and by that I mean they will either not slab them any longer even after the true serial numbers are released or if they do it will be different labels for sure, might actually be worth a good deal in the future like contemporary counterfeit micro-o slabbed coins that weren't turned in in 2005 are today. Only time will tell how this whole situation will play out.

The mint never intended to create any rarities with this data.

Well they never really intend to create rarities period. It just happens either by mis-calculating interest or in this case a FOIA request.

I have ten raw of these 2015 SE. I got 5 from JM and 5 from someone else, I bought these when they first came out in 2015. So I think I have ten of the 2015 P silver eagles.

I guess you can say they are from any Mint you want 'cuz there is no way to tell. They are, as intended, purely a bullion play

So will NCG and PSGS have to reimburse and stand behind their customers who have the mismarked erroneous "P" graded coins? Or will they become a collectible in themselves for one of the greatest debaucherys ever? I know it's the "cold day in hell" answer! I saw several 70's sell on ebay for over 10K............I pity the fools..........not really LOL!!
