Why aren't bullion silver eagles and silver maples sold directly from their respective mints while their gold counterparts are? Would the premiums be any lower buying direct from the mint rather than buying from JM Bullion, AMPEX, or MCM? Wouldn't cutting out the middle man reduce costs to the buyer?

That is a question that has been pondered many times on many different sites. I suspect that it has something to do with distribution capabilities of the USM and/or some obscure law somewhere in governmental codec. An interesting article on this can be found here:

Assuming the metal market is equal from the time the eagles are purchased, then sold, the premium is a minimum of $2.

I wouldn't want to make the required investment with such a narrow margin potential.

Often times I see much lower premiums on the SML in comparison to the ASE. One would have thought domestic silver would be cheaper.

Cutting out the middle man would reduce costs to the buyer, but not the seller!
