I have gone through 7 boxes of nickels this year and I have yet to find a Buffalo nickel. Is this normal? Last year I only went brought like 5 boxes and I pulled 3 buffs. At least I've got 4 war nicks this year. How common is it to find a buffalo?

I haven't found a Buffalo since 2015. And only one War Nickel this year so far. But lots of pre 60's.

I think they all migrate to John77's rolls! (I found a few this year, but down from last year also. I also had a 7-box dry run, but it was toward the end of last year). I just picked up 5 boxes, and noticed that one appears to be almost entirely 2017-P nickels. I hope the other boxes are better! It has been over a year since I found a V-nickel. That is how things look from here!

As a data point, I've gone through 2.5 boxes in the last couple weeks and found two buffalos. That's more than I usually find.

My overall average is about one per every 3 boxes. I don't know if that is typical.
Rest in Peace

All depends on the area you live in in US, when us old farts die and our idiot relatives dump our collections, or at least our unmounted coins...

Not often ... patience is indeed needed while CRH

To help with some data ... I'm at 365,600 nickels searched from my local bank ... have found a total of 66 Buffalo nickels.

Thats an average on 1 Buffalo every 138.5 bank rolls of $2 in coins ... so be of good cheer ... the key to cRH is keep looking.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

You can say that again!! haha. But it's all worth it when you finally find a keeper! I was just asking because I've only ever hunted 10 boxes of nicks as I almost strictly search pennies because I feel that's my best odds for the oldest coins. So far I've found 3 IHC, oldest was a 1893. I haven't really been keeping track of how much I've sorted other than the $700 in nickels this year. I know I've done at least $1000 in pennies probably closer to $1500. Do you keep track in a spreadsheet or? Sorry For asking so many questions haha just trying to gain more knowledge about CRH. Thanks everyone who replied. Also I'm in Utah and by my guess I only average about 7 wheats in a box of pennies.

With time and more quantity more buffaloes will show up. I've been through over 500,000 nickels & have found 139 buffaloes. My buffalo finds are one buffalo every 3637 coins searched or one buffalo every $181.00. My best box had eight buffaloes in it , four with no dates. I have gone as long as six boxes with no buffaloes. Keep on searching, you'll start finding some soon.

I just started CRHing this year. My last box of Nickels, I did not find any Buffalos or wartime, but I did find a die clash. The box before that, I actually found 3 Buffalos and 1 wartime. I've done about 6-8 boxes of nickles and can only remember 1 box that I didn't get either of those types of coins.
