Is it still worthwhile looking through bags of quarters and halves if a bank is willing to supply them? I have gone through some without finding anything valuable. I'm looking for pre-65 quarters and halves and 65-70 halves. Is there anything else I should be looking for? Uncs, PF/PL, errors?

Click CCF thread below. It has great information on what you can find in halves.

Thank you Joe. Is it possible to find proofs? I found a few mirror like surfaces?

Definitely possible to find proofs. Not a rare occurrence, but not a super common one either.

If you have to ask the question... probably not.

but... you need to determine what "worth" means first. Is it worth it to you?

I think it is still worth it. There are ignorant heirs dumping small collections into the coinstar machines every day.

Sadly, this is true.

I picked up 37 rolls of Kennedy half dollars yesterday at a local bank. I was pretty excited after I called the bank since the banker told me that the coins were just brought in by a customer. All of the rolls had a handwritten label with a first name and year date and mint mark. Unfortunately, the earliest year was 1971 (of course)! It is pretty sad that someone took the time to organize the coins by date and label all the rolls with a name (grandchildren?) and they were simply turned in for cash/deposit. I quickly looked through the rolls. The coins were uncirculated coins of the date and mint mark on the label. I didn't find any surprises. I was only looking for 64-70s (not DDO's, etc.) I wonder what happened to all of the pre-1971 rolls?

I've had better luck with the quarters. zit's worth it, for sure, buy you've got to be willing to wait for the reward.

Worth it? No.
I've been a roll hunter since 1978. Today, if you are interested in any kind of quantity, it's cheaper to buy your coins outright.

fistfulladirt is correct, as per typical, in that CRH =/= much profit most of the time, and you would often be better off working for half salary at mcdonalds, or just, as mentioned, buying the coins. It is,however, imo, worth it for the excitement and anticipation that the hunt comes with. I derive a lot more pleasure, for example, by finding a 1963 quarter rather that buying one.

I agree with Illegaltender, the excitement and drive to find the unknown is what fuels many roll hunters.

Yes, it is the random reinforcement (gambler's "buzz") that keeps us CRHer searching for our next find.

I agree with the random reinforcement theory. It's too bad banks don't still supply coins loose in bags anymore. Compared to slicing open rolls, it was a lot easier to search through bags of coins when I was a kid. Has anyone found a source for bags of dimes, quarters, or halves?
