I picked this up at my LCS today, and want to see what you all think it would grade. I would also like opinions on variety. It wasn't marked as being any particular variety, but I think it is one. I'm new to the whole LC thing, and I want to see if what I think (grade/attribute) is what those in the know would say.

There is a small rim ding above her head. Would that cause it to go Details, or would it still straight grade?

As for the attribute, can you tell me why or why not you would say a certain variety? That's the toughest, as there is very little detailed info out there about the various varieties. I'd like to get a book, but not sure which book to look for.

And yes, that is a hair inside the flip on the reverse, SMH.

I'd grade it about vf-35 maybe a 40. And that rim bump would not be enough to give it A details grade :D

VF25-VF30 range, weakly struck; looks like Newcomb 15 (N-15) based on the line from the left side of the 5 to the bust, which is diagnostic for N-15.

The scratches above and behind the head, and below CENT on the reverse, might result in a details grade, but perhaps not.

Google "Early American Coppers" and you can find lots of good information on reference materials to help you learn to grade and attribute Large Cents.

My grade would be VF-30, "commercial EF." By that I mean that Braided Hair large cents that look like this are often marketed as EF, but it really isn't. The minor marks you cited a common on circulated examples of these coins, don't bother me very much. It would be better if they weren't there, but it shouldn't drop the coin to a details grade. It would be different if this coin had AU or Mint State sharpness, but it doesn't.

I am assumming that the black line on the reverese from the "TE" in "UNITED" and the "E" in "STATES" is a hair. If it is scratch that would be a distraction.

I would say a solid VF-30, and I don't think the rim dent would warrant a details grade. Nice pick up! Like paralyse mentioned, checking out EAC is a must if you're interested in collecting Large Cents.
