Newly Revealed South Korean Patterns (C. 1974 ~ 1975)

My good friend, Jon, took photos of some patterns coins (bottom) that have recently been placed on display at the newly renovated (2017) Bank of Korea Museum building in the Myeongdong neighborhood of central Seoul. These patterns were cited in Korean numismatic literature concerning the preparations for the 1975 100 Won commemorative coin (30th Anniversary of Liberation). However, I have NEVER seen images of these patterns in any of my research on Korean coins.

The coins at the top are clearly the pattern coins struck to test out the design for the proposed (and then rejected) "Memorial Coin" for President Park Chung-hee's wife, Yook Young-soo, who was assassinated in August 1974. Again, I have read about these, but have never seen them before!

The designs for the two pattern coins on the bottom are described below. It seems that the pattern for the National Assembly Building is not on display, however, just its reverse featuring the Expressway, which both coins shared.

"In late 1974 and early 1975, the South Korean Mint, Komsco, engaged in several experiments involving engraving and test strikes, among other minting processes that were involved in making larger, unique commemorative coins. These preliminary efforts produced two kinds of pattern coins, one featuring the Independence Arch, Dongnimmun, that stands in the Seodaemun neighborhood of Seoul, while the other featured the National Assembly building that had recently finished construction that year in Yeouido. The reverse sides of both of these pattern coins included an image of the Seoul-to-Busan four-lane expressway (Gyeongbu Expressway), probably the most well-known infrastructure project of the Park-era in South Korea."
