Good morning, found this coin in a coin star and needing help identifying it. I believe it's a 10 Yen Japanese but want to verify that as well as dating the coin.
Thanks in advance.

This is indeed a 10 yen coin, dated Showa 53 - 1978

There are online sources and catalogs that explain Coin Dating for the Eastern World as well as online sources that focus on Japan, China, etc.
They are easy to understand and they give the reader grasp on how to date the coins.
However, if you search for Japanese Coin Dating you will get ads for young ladies.

LOL, that's what I'm afraid of, but then again
I actually asked my gf and she dated it at a 1953. She can read Japanese numbers. I won't mention the dating site though

This coin is from the Showa Era (which started in 1926), and is from year 53. To determine the date in the Gregorian calendar, there is some math involved: start of Showa Era + the year on the coin - 1 (because there is no year zero). So, 1926 + 53 - 1 = 1978.

I thought it meant it could be between 1953 and 1978. Thanks for clarification.

All you really have to do is learn the numbers 1-10 in Chinese/Hanja/Kanji and you will always be able to date these yourself. Even if you can't read the era, you can still search the coin and "Year ##".
