Got a new ZTE Max XL Phone and all I can say is WOW it takes better photos than my DSLR (with not very good glass).

Some examples:

let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance,

Those are excellent pics.

It just goes to show you don't need 50+ MP DSLRs, Printing-Nikkors, or Mitutoyo M Plan APOs to get good coin pics.

Nice pics. Are the colors true to the coin in hand? Looks like the white balance is off a bit and all the pics seem to be a bit out of focus. Sorry to nitpick.

with John1 that the WB looks to be off. I think many phones probably "warm things up" automatically. If you download to Lightroom or PS anyway, it might be worth your time to work out a preset that will tone things down to reflect reality - as well as optimize the size for CCF.

Otherwise, I agree with you that phones are often much better suited to taking pics like you've posted than are DSLRs - even with the best of glass!

the color is close as it was adjusted in my editing program in fact the color straight off the phone was a little flat. As for the focus, the Morgan obverse is a tiny bit fuzzy due to the phone moving when I took the photo (laziness on my part, should have taken a second photo). the others look to my eye to be sharp for low resolution jpgs that have been saved 3 times before being posted. (jpg files degrade with each save and open)

thanks everyone,
Blair

Phone cameras are quite good. Back to the iP4 or even earlier these cameras could produce good closeup photos. But the limiting factor is not the equipment used. In the systems I build, I include old Canon Rebel XS cameras. These are only 10MP, and are nearly 10 years old now, but have the modern features needed for world-class coin photography. And in my "EL-Cheapo" thread, you can see that for publishing images at sizes appropriate for the web (like the ones shown by the OP), even a very inexpensive lens will do nicely. So what is the limiting factor or factors? Besides the basics (composition and framing; focus; exposure) and control issues (such as WB), it's all about lighting. It's just really hard to get lighting "right".

My photography professor once refered to photography as "painting with light" and while equipment does make a difference the most important equipment in a photographer's Arsenal is their eyes...
