Could someone please explain in simple terms what happened to this quarter. The reverse words are smeared (for lack of a proper term). I think its "die rotation"? But the obverse has issues too. IGWT is fades off toward outer edge and the mint mark is almost completely missing. My apologies for the photos, still looking for a good lens for coin photography. Am I correct in thinking this is more than one issue/error? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Thanks John1. Do dies deteriorate in one area? I read a lot about "stamped through grease" and Die Deterioration and various reasons for uneven strikes. Having trouble deciphering the differences and how to tell them apart on a coin.

Are image one and image three at the same rotation? (Did you rotate the coin besides flipping it over between pictures?

Closer images might show more, but I feel it is from an over polished die that reduces the fields on the obverse die weakening them. Over polishing will make the devices smaller on the EPU. If they were grease filled, they would be wider or totally prevented from striking up. The reverse also look like a LDS die issue. The outside letters can flatten a bit making them weaken from extended die use. Polishing these reverse letters will make them shorter in height, and leave them mushy and fat looking. Again it is hard to tell exactly from the images provided. But that is what I see on the images provided.

Late Die State example. This is what happens when the mint uses the coin dies too long on coins. The letters get a "mushy" appearance. :)

I don't believe you can have die fill on EPU, aren't the letters incuse on the coin? If so that would mean they are raised on the die. Can't "fill" a raised feature. On the other hand they would be more susceptible to die polishing.

Quote: On the other hand they would be more susceptible to die polishing. Also wonder about the affects from die clashes on raised devices? Would think that might flatten them a bit. Thanks, Doug.
