Hi all, I'm getting close to being able to pull the trigger on a $500 FRN to add to my currently collection/type set. I don't know a whole lot about these in regards to fakes, etc. so my question is how concerned should I be buying a non-certified example? I see good looking examples of these frequently on ebay from what appear to be reputable sellers but they are rarely certified in the price range I'm looking at. I'd appreciate any insight or feedback.

Thanks

Use caution and be patient.

I was in the same boat a while back when searching for a $500 note. It was paramount to me to find a note with both original paper and great eye appeal. The longer I looked, the more I saved. Originally my budget afforded me something in the XF range, but by being patient and saving I was able to find an example in the AU range with original paper (not pressed or washed) with very nice eye appeal. My advise is to get the best example you can afford and stay away from bargain, problem notes. There are plenty of these notes in the marketplace. What is your current budget ?

Thanks for the insight Steve. My budget is in the $850 range give or take a few $'s. I don't mind waiting for the right example to come long that suits me, as I know it eventually will, just didn't know if getting a non certified example was a big no-no. Most of the ones I see in this range are not certified but based on my experience do look like genuine examples. I stay away from people who don't look like dealers, or have a no return policy, etc.

I am unable to remember if I've ever spent that kind of money on a note NOT in a major TPG holder. Ask yourself, why is this high denomination/high value note note not in a major TPG holder. Your current budget puts you in the VF range. Spending $850 on a raw note, strictly from the sellers image and description would keep me awake at night. My worries would not be if it was genuine as much as it being doctored.

Good point, and the kind of feedback I was looking for. There are a couple of larger shows in my area coming up, maybe I'll just wait and see what I can find there. I've had good luck with some ebay purchases in the past, but this would be more than I've ever spent. Thanks

As Steve says, take your time. There are always tons of these out there and the prices tend to be stable.

Well just an update on my quest to get a $500 FRN for my type set. I had a budget for a VF note but saw this in my local coin shop and for only a $185 premium over face (what I negotiated down to) I couldn't pass it up. Would've liked a little better note, but alas it is only for me as no one else in my family has any interest and I like it. Plus it gives me some additional $ to spend on the next note. I've seen a lot worse than this for more cost.

If it works for you is all that matters!

185$ over face is not bad at all and the note is from one of the smaller Fed banks.

The note may have soft corners but think of the stories it could tell.

Nice pick up!
