The New Orleans Mint opened and began minting coins in 1838, after being established as a part of Andrew Jackson's westward push to expand the country. The no mint cranked out silver dollars beginning in 1846. Silver LS$s were minted at this branch in 1846, 1850, 1859 and 1860. Of these, the 1850 issue is the scarcest and most valuable. Very happy to acquire this first year Mint issue today which incidentally had a tiny mintage of 59,000 coins. Compare that to the 13.32 million silver dollars produced at the high water mark for silver dollar production by the no mint in 1901. Kindly let me know your thoughts on grade and problems. Thanks!

EF-40, just a superb example for the grade. Evident feather wear and weak Liberty hair hold this back.

Looks like the coin was dropped on that side, giving it a dent.

XF-45. Relatively blemish free for these big old dollars other than the rim ding. However, that ding doesn't distract IMO. Nice pick up.

Almost looks like a lamination rather than a rim bruise at 12:00? I agree with XF40 and maybe 45 if there's any luster at all.

My grade would be EF-40 and no more. I think that the rim thing at the top of the obverse is probably market acceptable. I would look at it hard though to make sure that there are no file marks. File marks to remove rim bumps is a bad thing, even when it's in a TPG holder.

Over a year ago when I was looking for Lesher Dollar (look it up in the Red Book), I was looking at an NGC graded piece. The dealer wanted "all the money" desptie the fact that the rim had been filed to remove an edge bump. Rim bumps can be a problem on these pieces because they are octagonal, not round. NGC had ignored the rim bump and the filing which left the piece over priced by $2,500 to $3,000 in my opinion.

that a 40 is tops here although I think the natural surfaces are extremely attractive & exactly what I love to see in Seated coinage.
