Just seeing if anyone has found an actual 1973-D Kennedy half, no FG. Almost or close doesn't count. Thanks

My records show that while roll hunting I found a no F and a no G, but not a no FG. Obviously die polishing related. I do believe the majority of No FGs are polishing issues. However, the 1982 No FG has a different die variety than normal 1982s.

Thanks. I do have a 1982-P I had graded w/ no FG. I have found two 1972's and a 1973 (no trace of FG). Sent all three off for grading. Kinda excited on the news back on the 1973-D

Great finds IMO. I know I read online somewhere that its possible to find just about every date with a no FG. I just got out my records and here is a list of what I found roll searching 186 boxes over a period of 2.5-3 years: 1972-D No FG (9) - these might be a die variety 1972-D No F (1) 1973-D No F (5) 1973-D No G (1) 1977-D No F (3) 1982 No FG (1 - but I bought one of the polished-no-FG s and one of the error-no FGs from a CCF member) 1982 No F (2) 1983 No FG (8) 1988 No FG (1) (I think this one is in rough shape) Others normally not listed I have seen for sale on ebay are: 1974-D No FG 1977-D No FG 1989 No FG Again - I don't include ghosted letters. Also, I have seen quite a few slabbed No FG pieces on ebay where you can see the FG! I found a couple myself that when you tilt at the right angle, the FG is ghosted, but there. I think the slabbing companies should have a higher standard. In fact I threw back quite a few of the ghosted ones before I saw the ghosted FG's in slabs.

Interesting list Earle and thanks for the information. I was wondering why PCGS doesn't have more years listed on coins w/o the FG on the Kennedy's. From what I've seen, they just focus on the 1982 and 1972 and I think the 1966. No mention of the others. I did send them my 73' and requested a picture so I'm hoping they upload it to their site and have it listed like the 72 is.

Again, I believe the reason there are not more dates listed is b/c the majority of dates of No FGs are mostly considered to be non-errors as opposed to the engraver actually forgetting to put the initials into the dies. Die polishing will wipe out details engraved into the dies. Many coins can be found without polished-out details. As you said, the 1966, 1972-D, and 82 seem to be acknowledged in the hobby as actual die engraving errors. The initials were never on the dies making the coins. As to having yours slabbed, it will cost you a lot more than you will ever be able to recoup in the value. I don't really know for sure or not if the slabbing companies will mark it as No FG or if they only mark the three dates mentioned above this way. Do keep us posted please. No matter what happens - I think its a neat find b/c I specialize in Kennedy halves.

I took the image of your 1973-D from their website (as credited), and even though I don;t care for the TPGs, I have to admit I see the Ghosted G that likely caused them to not label it as a No FG. I highlighted it below. However, this does not explain why their OWN image defining a "No Initials" Kennedy half ALSO shows a ghosted G! This is from their website (as credited). Here is yet another example of why I do not put the faith into TPGs like more modern collectors (especially since the advent of the internet) do. The systems are not as rock solid as they like people to think they are - but I have said all this in other threads. I have seen many ghosted, slabbed "No FG" pieces sold over the years on ebay. Ghosted FGs show up better when the coin is at a slight angle. I also think the above picture is why there are so many non-slabbed "No FG" pieces listed where the ghosts are plain in the pictures. I think in hand that glare hinders our eyes from seeing it straight on, whereas cameras can pick it up better.

Nice, thanks for pointing that out. When I looked at it, I didn't see it at all, not even a ghost. When you pointed it out and the shape, I saw it. Thanks for doing that.

No Problem, go ahead and click on the PCGS photo to see it larger - you will see theirs more clear also.
I have deliberately thrown back pieces just like in the PCGS "definition photo."

Received my 1973-D half dollar back today. Pretty happy with the "minor variety" I received on it.

Good for you! So it seems they stick to their definition of ghosted letters constituting missing designer initials.
