Hello everyone,

I saw this designation MSFBP on NGCs site for a 1943 S Merc.. Could someone please tell me what the "P" at the end of that designation stands for? I was assuming that it may mean proof like, but I see they have the designation MSPL on some? But none that have the PL with the FB. Thank you.

Usually with Mercs it's either FSB for Full Split Bands, or just, FB. Can't remember ever seeing a P at the end. This was on their site with no explanation? That's odd.

edit: after a little research, I found that FBP is the notation used in their census data for FBPL or Full Bands Proof Like. FBPL is used on the label and they mean the same thing. Here's a link to a table with all of their strike characteristics, both for census and on labels:

Mint State Full Bands Proof

If it is a Proofand has full bands, NGC will use the letters PF##, not MS. Proof Like will get MS##FB PL on the label of the slab but will be noted in the census on their website as only MS##FBP

See the column headings on the table that I've linked in my earlier response.

As you can see from my screenshot, they have MSFBP indicated here for 1943 S 10C

Too many letters. Just buy a nice coin and don't worry about all of the designations.

No proofs in '43. As stated earlier, this is the designation for a proof like full bands coin. Maybe they were limited to 5 letters?

Thanks for the info everyone... I always buy my coins based on their appearance to me.. As far as the designation question goes, I'm just trying to add another tool to the knowledge base.. in fact low or not so good designations have helped me acquire some of my most favorite coins ..at a great price..I don't collect designations ... just wanted to learn
