I'm not sure what the vertical mark should look like. It surely doesn't stand out on the plate photos. I'm still thinking it may be a V-14. edit to add - you may want one of the Mods to move this to the VAM forum.

When I researched VAM-7 in VAMWORLD photos(same obverse as VAM-14) the tiniest vertical mark can be seen emanating from the top of the denticle. That die marker does not exist on my coin which is why I am puzzled.

It may be the same as VAM-14 and if it is, the vertical mark may be a die state much like the later die state VAM-14 vertical line between ED.

What Dave said. However Nate is doing an 85o study so he might chime in too.

Does looks like maybe a V14 late die state. Be sure to check VAM-16 as well. Can you get a photo of the wing/neck gap on reverse?

I'll see if I can find my 14 this evening to compare.

Mint mark is telling me of VAMs 14 and 16, you have a VAM-16. VAM-14 mm is set a little bit lower. I've yet to find a VAM-14 without the denticle chip, though it wouldn't surprise me if they are out there.

May just be an illusion, but I might see the small crack off the left side of the 1's base down to denticles at date.

I'm now questioning my attribution of my VAM-14 as there is no vertical mark off the denticle as well.

Just check the VAM-14 page ( http://www.vamworld.com/1885-O+VAM-14 ) and look at the ear polishing lines as well as the polish line(s) at wing/neck gap and bow. The mm position is also a little different than VAM-16.

well the fundamentile thing is.....? the denticle poop....a scractch here or there? it's a far cry from the basics of doubling trippling from the early stages of coin production
