Well all of the 2009 coins had significantly lower mintages and that was well known, so yes a lot of people hoarded them. The Lincon cents had the first design change in 50 years which made them an additional target, The nickels and dimes were the lowest mintages in something like 50 years. The quarters were the last year of the State Quarters (Or the only year of the territorial quarters) and their mintages due to the change jar dumping were small compared to the rest of the State Quarters which made them harder to come by as well. So they were hoarded too.
This.

I think so too.....lots of people hoarded them and I hardly ever see a 2009 anything in circulation.

Perhaps a "fine" 2009 will be more valuable than a MS 40 years from now.

I've never seen any 2009 nickels or dimes in circulation, either. The only ones I have are in my mint set.

On another note, can anyone tell me why the 2012 proof and mint sets are going for more than the 2011 or 2013? Production numbers don't seem to support the prices. Just curious...

The mint abruptly ended proof set sales in 2012. Many people were left without a set.

You can find a reduction by nearly 90% with some in 2009. I wouldn't call that "relatively low."

I follow your logic, but if you want to get technical, your statement is a textbook example of relative comparison.

Yes, MANY fewer were minted than surrounding neighbor years. Yes, they are very likely hoarded. But eventually they will get cashed in/out. I don't get 2009s often but I do get them. You don't see any of the 1B 1958 Wheaties in circulation but no one is calling them rare or scarce. There were 2.3B 2009 cents minted for circulation.

We can agree to disagree, but numbers are numbers.

And that was indeed a strange thing in 2012 when they stopped selling Mint sets abruptly.

Thanks for the info. Of course that's the only mint set I didn't try to get mint-direct.

I remember in 2009 getting the first 3 Lincoln Cent designs somewhat regularly in change. Less so for the 4th design. Then after 2010 they are rarely seen (by me anyway). I might have gotten 1 each 2009 P nickel and dime (no D's) in change since 2009. They are certainly not rare but they don't show up often. You aren't going to get rich on these but they are still fun to find when they do show up. That's what makes it interesting.

What are key dates (caused by unusually low mintage) then if not relative comparison?

I didn't present any opinions disguised as fact. I presented the facts concerning the 2009-D dime mintage compared to surrounding years. I can see how a reduction to 50% would be called "low." A reduction by 80%+ is very low.

Low mintages past cannot be used as a direct comparison because there are many more people involved in the circulation coinage equation now.

Sorry, spruett001, that was not really directed at you!

It is just a semi-famous quote (which was not actually verbatim) that I thought CelticKnot might get.
