Does anyone know if a list exists of the artists/designers' names who produced the statehood/DC/territories/ATB quarters? For the statehood designs at least, the Red Book only says that they were designed by "mint personnel," which could indicate that a bevy of people were involved as opposed to one person.

Just curious if these people have been credited for their work or if their names are lost to the sands of time.

In the early years of the State Quarters each state ran their own design contest with the state Governor choosing the winning design. That design was then turned over to the Mint and their artists produced the final design work. Offically the Mint does not give design credit to any of the designers. This caused some complaints when the Mint designs were not quite faithful to the designs as submitted by the Governors. The designer of the Missouri was so unhappy about the changes to his winning design that he had a bunch of stickers made up of his design and put them over the reverse of a lot of Missouri quarters until they made him stop. Reading back issues of Coin World would probably come up with the names of the winning designers. Q D Bowers also wrote a book about the series and he may have the names there.

After that the rules changed. No more actual design submissions were allowed. The States might still run their contests, but the Mint would only accept a written verbal description of the design. From that written description the Mint Artists would then create the final design. (since there were no actual designs submitted, there was a lot leff flak. After that there was also a lot less interest in design submission in the state contests.

One interesting fact is that for some reason Mississippi never bothered with a design contest and never submitted a design. The Magnolia Flower design on the Mississippi quarter is wholey from the Mint designers.

That it interesting. It is one of the better designs, in my opinion.

The CCF pages for the quarters is interesting, but I'm questioning the credits given for the designers. On CCF, it claims New York and Rhode Island were designed by Alfred Maletsky and Thomas D. Rodgers, respectively. Those names appear on the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_State_Quarters Wikipedia page as the engravers. Daniel Carr claims credit for those at http://www.dc-coin.com/about-us.aspx, and his name is credited on the site I referenced in an earlier post in this thread, that was later deleted.

Should the CCF pages be updated to expand and clarify the designer credits?

Submissions were only considered themes, not an actual design. The Mint employees turn that theme into a design and get the credit for the final design. That way the US Mint retains all the copyrights.

Thanks, Bobby, that makes sense. The term "designer" is just differently in these cases then (and would explain why DC's initials are not on "his" coins).

I don't understand why my earlier post was deleted, but that's probably not important in this thread. If I violated some rule, I'd like to know what it was (privately, if that's appropriate) so I don't repeat my mistake.
