Ok, first thing off I'm not the best at grading small cents...

1940 VF20
1942 EF40

Are the scratches on the 1940 Obverse on the holder plastic or on the coin? That's one old 2x2!

First one I'd say F-12 and the second one ef-40 IMO.

Unlike Canadian cents of the same vintage the reverse wear accounts for half the grade.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

the two "Cents" might grade VF-30 and EF-45 respectively.

I'd say VF and EF.

FYI, this is a tougher series to grade (post-1938 Nfld crown). Here is what is in the classic Charlton & Willey grading guide:

Seeing these coins is a trip down memory lane for me.

One of the coins that started me on my lifetime love of the hobby was the discovery of a 1940 Newfoundland penny in my paper route money way back when in the early 60s.

Even though it has little numismatic value I still cherish it to this day and would never part with it.
