I think my mum dug it up on her farm. One of her grandparents of something probably dropped it. Don't know what you could call the condition. I saw someone selling one on ebay in Choice Uncirculated condition for $1300 but later changed it to $230 because no one was bidding on his first starting bid.

Hi & to the forum.

It's very hard to tell condition from the photo you posted. The coin appears to have verdigris on it. Copper coins that have been dug up are usually not worth very much unless they're as scarce as hen's teeth.

I don't know much about GB farthings, so hopefully someone will be able to give a rough approximation.

Any chance of a clearer picture?

The Edit function is in the top bar of your post, 3rd button to the right of the date, a page with a pen across the bottom right corner.

Looks kinda big for a farthing. Not a penny or half penny? Piccy is still a bit out of focus. Try putting the coin a bit further away.

Yep, it says "ONE PENNY".

Australia didn't make it's own copper coins back then; this is a British penny.

1890 is a fairly common date for British pennies. My catalogue puts the lowest price at $2.50 in Fine. Being a "greenie", yours wouldn't get even that much if you were to try to sell it to a dealer.

Yeh my mum found it at their barn, in Queensland. Got there somehow. yeh tried to clean it, it kind of worked but still... It's the oldest coin I have so I may as well just keep it.

I tihnk there was a mintage of 2000000 and something.

It's always fun finding something like this even if it isn't worth much.

I have this crazy idea of buying a bulk lot of pennies, keeping the good ones of course, but the badly worn or ones with verdigris burying them all around the backyard for some future owner to dig up.

Recorded mintage for 1890 British pennies 15,311,000. And finding British pennies here in Oz isn't uncommon. Prior to 1911 when Australian copper coinage was introduced, British pennies were used here. Of course, keeping a remote colony like Queensland supplied with freshly minted pennies wasn't high on the list of priorities for the British government, so most of the ones found here are well worn from long years spent in circulation.

Don't you think the archaeologists of the future are going to have a hard enough job trying to figure out our civilization without that sort of thing going on?

lol learjet good idea, yeh my mum just likes it cause its old, I think ill just keep it as a keepsake lol.

Thanks for the info Sap, must have been 2 000 000 farthings or something or the site was wrong. It was probably is fairly good condition when my mums grandparents had it, they probably just dropped it and it weathered outside.
Rest in Peace

I have an 1890 British Penny in Fine condition.

Part of my British Penny collection which is complete from 1888 to 1970. One of my favorite collections.

Many years ago, when I was very young, I dug up a few U.S. Wheat Cents. Still have them somewhere. Unfortunately they were barely readable, and common dates. Still it's fun to find coins that way.
