Bare with me all, I am an amateur cherrypicker....Well a hopeful cherrypicker. I have a few coins I've been meaning to post, but I felt the need to start with this as I've never even seen this kind of error. At least not this specific. I don't even know what one would call such am error. If that is indeed what it is. This 1996 D Washington quarter has some sort of strange defect where Washington's portrait on the obverse has a gaping hole just off his eye where the material had not completely filled in as intended. I know there's a lot of wear on this quarter. Despite the lack of detail my phone's camera seems to capture, I was at least able to decipher myself that this issue is not just wear, as I can see those "cartwheel" marks of the background in the area that had not been completely filled. What is this? Is it worth taking it to be looked at further, (keeping in mind I completely understand this quarter is pretty beaten). Thanks all!

to CCF. My first thought is over abraided die. Not really worth taking it in to a LCS unless they know errors and varieties even though this is not one.

The flat spot at the eye is due to excessive die abrading, the die was resurfaced and some of the fine detail was removed in the process. Take a look at this "broken nose" Mercury dime for a more extreme example of excessive die abrading-

to CCF, the gap above the Nose area on your Merc. is also the result of an over abraided Die ( over polished).
Nice finds
