How can you tell the difference if there is no date? What do you think - is this a 1916 or a 1917 Type 1? What would you grade it and what do you think it is worth? Thanks guys!

Defninately a 1917, only worth silver melt.
Would grade a PO-1
One of the diagnostics is the rivets on the shield, strong rivits = 1917

Hard to tell from your photo, but the 1917 also has a second curl in the hair above the ponytail. The 1916 does not have the second curl.
Here is a photo of a worn 1917 type one. To show you what to look for.

1917 Type I for sure.

Just worth $3 and change for the silver value.

No question a 1917.

Not worth $3, worth $8-10.

(No offense meant, Debrajc)

What's interesting is that even in big lots of Standing Liberty quarters, you can make out all of the Type 1 1917's because there are so many rivets and the rivets are so strong.

One-look 1917. There are lots of "tells".

Thanks guys for helping me determine this coin's date! I do see the second curl so it's a 1917.
