What might cause those smaller egg shaped beads ?
Guessing possible die or planchet movement while being struck ? ..but a very cool effect indeed..
Someone has good eyes to pick up on that..

Have you seen more then one with the smaller beads? Could it be a weak strike using a over polished and worn die? Have you counted the beads in each?
Cheers, Bill

It was given to me to do the profile on it and the only one known so far. I really like the egg shaped beads and this one is kinda of a head scratcher. No I never counted the beads.

I counted twice and got 120 on each dime.

I'm thinking the same as Devlec and Hounddog Bill. Is it a possibility that a Mule was created using a dime reverse and a penny obverse? The penny obverse would probably have larger beads in this case so the mule theory doesn't stand.

It's not a variety 'til more than one are found. Hopefuly more will appear. Like Houndog Bill I am leaning toward overpolished/well-worn die, look how the logo and ring around it appear so low in relief.

chadcoins can you post a picture of the reverse on your coin. I went through a 1000.00 worth dimes. the 2008 dimes has a another variation. the 0.S are different. the one I found has a large 0 and a smaller 0.

It's Struck with a penny die obverse imo. Space between the mint logo and queen is the same as a penny, also size of beads. It's a different die design. Just my opinion, you may want to look at some pennies from the time to compare.
