Hello, I'm new to this site and was hoping to find or get information about a 1983 D Lincoln Penny which is messing the LI in the word LIBERTY. I don't know much about coins as just started, and I'm really happy, excited, all the while anxious to learn more about this group and hopefully will grow into and have more knowledge about coins. Don't have a camera and so have taken photos all from within my phone's camera. They are not the best of quality, but I hope it helps. THANK YOU MUCH *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

That coin was struck with a Grease Filled Die. Cool error, but only worth maybe a dollar or so.

baby_loks! This is most likely from a grease-filled die. The letters LI were filled on the die and therefore left no, or a very faint, impression of those two letters.

It's just a Grease Filled Die strike. Grease or a foreign substance filled in the L & I on the die preventing it from producing those letters on your Lincoln Cent. A cool find but not worth a premium over the 1 cent value. Darn, don't ya just feel foolish when you type up a reply and then when you send it you find 2 others have already mentioned the same thing you just wrote?

to the forum! It is ma grease filled/strike through error since only a few of the details are missing. When a lot of details are missing, then it has been over-polished like these: Here's a diagram of the difference.

baby_loks0623, The LI seems to have been Struck Through Grease or the two devices filled with debris. Crazyb0, concerning your image of the 198? noting over-polished die. As long as the weight is normal, maybe more like a weak strike. I cant see the die polisher, QC dept or the machine operator placing a die showing that much loss of detail due to over polishing back into production. Also maybe heavy Greaser, but the lack of strike up on the reverse opposite the bust makes me think otherwise. Thanks, Doug.
