Found in a cedar wood coin box. Can the stains on the obverse be safely removed? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by error_koin 06/24/2017 5:39 pm

I expected to see a lot more staining from the cedar box . But you can try a soak in Acetone . It's a circulated dinged up coin so don't panic if you can't get it right .

Will do. I've used acetone on my silver coins with good success. Haven't tried on a clad coin due to not knowing of any adverse effects. I was under the impression this was an uncirculated coin, so will try it to experiment.

to the CCF!! Very nice photos! Well done with T-Bop, circulated and dinged up just about sums it up. You can give it a bath in acetone if you want to, but it will not increase the value. Looks like a great pocket piece candidate to me.

I would not try anything beyond acetone. He still looks pretty good! Of course, I admit bias.

MS70 would probably take the staining off.

With that split above his left eye, Ike looks like he was in a fight.

Please, do not use MS70 on that Ike.

This is most definitely a circulated coin. Look at the high points on the cheek, jawline, middle of neck, etc. You can see it has circulation wear, not to mention beat up with lots of dings and gouges. Cool "scar" above his eye. I'm not good at grading Ikes, but about the best you could probably hope for is AU. So, we're talking about a coin that might be worth $1.25 at best.

Quote:Please, do not use MS70 on that Ike. Why is that Jbuck? I use MS70 on some of my coins if they have spots or if they are super dark. It has never ruined a coin, just added a lot to the appearance and value. TPG's do not put coins that have been "conserved" with MS70 in "Details-Cleaned" holders.

I've never used MS70, but heard it can mess up copper coins. I'm a bit leery of it, supposedly some mild detergent. I have plenty of acetone and I trust it. I'm with you, Jbuck, if acetone don't help, I consider it a lost cause.
