I recently obtained a few coins when my father passed. All the coins were U.S. coins except the 1944 threepence of which I have included photos.

It appears that the mint made an error in the metal makeup of the coin. I am not sure whether the bright metal on the back of the coin is silver or nickel. It does not seem to darken or tarnish. Also, notice the lighter area around the ear on the front. The metal almost pushed through from the back.

I would like to know how to proceed with having my coin graded, if it is even worth it. I was hoping the mint error would increase the value.

Should I send the coin in to a U.S. grading firm since I live in Texas? Would you be willing to share a suggested worth? Answers to these questions and any other advise would be welcomed.

My opinion is that it is not a mint error at all. What I see is "damage" caused by addition of some unknown substance to the surface of the coin. A 1944 3 pence is not a rare coin.

and I would have to agree with nss-52. It does not look like a mint error.

- looks like some solder got onto the coin. As nss-52 says, this is a common coin and you can find them in dealer's junk boxes all over the UK for 10p or so.

Thank you all for your input. I will stash the threepence back as an interesting coin that belonged to my dad. I like your responses and will revisit.
