Hi Forum,

Came across this coin at a car boot today, it was with a lot of British coins, including silver. Apparently the lady selling them husband collected them but sadly passed away. I did not pay much for it, but wondered if it was a copy. Looking for peoples opinion. It weighs 24g. Quite heavy.

Kindest Regards

Paul

From what I can see the coin appears genuine though a bit over cleaned. I didn't find any matches to it in any of the fake reports either.

Many thanks echizento, I do not think the light I used is helping, it is much darker than in the pictures. I have been trying to find one with the same design on it to date it, if anybody can help there it would be greatly appreciated. Kindest Regards Paul

Comparison to one from Forum's fake board...not sure if it's a match...perhaps a different generation of the same basic cast? The description has the documented fake as a cast from a Paduan sestertius and therefore as a "fake of a collectible fake."

If the OP coin is fake, it's much better made than the example posted by Bob. The OP coin appears Stuck not cast, the metal appears different between the two, the lettering is much clearer and the overall detail much more defined.

Interesting piece and thanks for posting edge views Paul! Not sure on real vs. fake, but the rev inscription looks engraved some to me.

I strongly agree with Bob L's comments.
in addition:

I cannot get the chance to handle it, but the surfaces appear to be greasy, which is a characteristic of cast fakes.
There is a lack of evidence of any sign of metallic distress on the edge, which is a characteristic of struck ancient coinages, the most common form of which is small radial splits.
Good pressure casting can sometimes reproduce these, but close examination inside those splits can tell you much.

The lettering appear to be of a modern style. That may be the result of tooling, but I strongly suspect that is not the case here; close examination with a loupe should confirm.

Thank you to everybody for your help with this one. I really appreciate it. Perhaps I will try to pop it into Spinks to see what they say, and post the results here. Thank you all again.
