Title says it all. I have looked the term up and found several threads here about Partial Collar errors but haven't found one yet that explains what exactly causes it or what to look for.

Is it like it sounds? When the coin is only partly seated in the collar during the strike? How do you diagnose it as a Partial Collar Error?

Do these command much of a premium?

Thanks for any info...Mont.

There's a short explanation here:

You may also want to look into "railroad rim" errors as they are at least related if not the same.

I don't know about premiums.

Where the collar is touching the edge on the dollars, you can see the reeds. Where is there is no collar the edge is not contained, making it look larger and not reeds present.

Partial collar errors can be tilted(shown below) or straight(coop's image), the part of the edge not confined by the collar will have a larger than normal diameter and will lack reeding.

Thanks all!

Nice link Spruett. I also saved it in my favorites list.

Thank for the pictures coop and biokemist. Very helpful

I can now say with certainty that the Kennedy half dollar I have is definitely a Partial Collar error. And now I know what to look for in the future.

Thanks again...Mont.
