This 1974-D Ike came from a mint set, yet there are heavy gouges on the temple and a broad scuff mark from this area down to the cheek. Considering its origin, I think this is machine damage. What say you?

I would not use the term machine damage because most of us will be thinking MD as in doubled die. Your coin looks like PSD,dinged and scratched in the minting process.Hope that makes sense.

I could be wrong, but I do not think mint sets coins got their preferential treatment until the 1980s. That is, they were minted and handled just like any other business strike.

Also, those mint sets are made with a non-rigid plastic. It would not take much to transfer any contact though them to the coins.

With all of that being said, the photo says MS-64 to me.

I would say MS-64 with nice luster for this Ike. From my own observations with mint sets, the Ikes usually have the most contact marks of any denomination, which is a shame because they're the best part!
