Royal Canadian Mint - The reverse design by Canadian artist Calder Moore presents a contemporary, stylized take on the traditional depiction of Canada's most beloved national emblem. Intricate engraving re-creates a grouping of maple leaves, with each leaf comprised of geometric-based shapes that give it a more multi-faceted appearance, to convey a swaying motion in the warm breeze. Beautiful reverse gold plating fills the reverse in a way that mimics the golden glow cast by the summer sun. Only the effigy on the obverse, and the central leaf on the reverse, offer a glimpse of the coin's silver surface—its polished surface adds an exquisite shine, like that of direct sunlight illuminating each engraved detail within the leaf's serrated tips. The reverse gold-plated obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt (P). 2017 3 oz. Reverse Gold-Plated Pure Silver Coin - Whispering Maple Leaves

I'm trying to understand what is the RCM first here. Is it because it's 3 oz? And what is reverse gold plating? If you gold plate most of the coin, leaving just a small bit of the silver showing, isn't it still just gold plating? I could understand if it was a gold coin plated with silver, but otherwise I don't get what reverse gold plating is.

I think reverse plating means the coin is first evenly plated then plating is partially removed to achieve the contrast in the leaves legend etc. I believe it's not the first "reverse plated " coin.

Quote: I believe it's not the first "reverse plated " coin. The RCM touted their use of the same "reverse gold-plated" approach on the 2016 $10 Inukshuk half-ounce silver coin.

Anyone else find the capsules weakly sealed? I had one nearly fall apart as I lifted the coin/capsule out. They all seem to squeak like Gumball Machine capsules when pressed together to ensure a good fit. Normal for coins of this size? Not a good impression. But better than booger nose, I guess. Still, makes me wonder about the quality of the plating,e tc.

@headlessone: my capsule was not properly closed when received. The coin rattled in its capsule when I picked it up out of the clamshell. A strong squeeze of the capsule sealed it right up. But it certainly gave me pause because it would have certainly have been bouncing around in that loose capsule during shipping. I don't know if the plastic could damage the coin or plating, but it makes me wonder if the plating flaws on the rim of my coin was due to that. But I have bigger issues, as you've mentioned. Man, it looks like I hit the trifecta with this coin. Maybe I should go buy a lottery ticket.
