So I was going through my change for the day and I came across these two 1993 D Lincoln pennies. The one on the left is smaller in size such as: head and body. I measured them with a toothpick to make sure I wasn't just seeing things.

I apologize, as I am just dipping my feet into the Coin World, so can someone please explain as to why they are different?

To the forum!

Long or short answer? I give long ones, so bear with me. This could be a result of a number of things, a weak strike may at times cause some differences, but not here. There are more than one working die used, so some will say that dies were different. Problem there is the working dies were all made from same hubbing die. What you have is a polished die being used on the right coin. As dies wear out, to prolong life they are polished with a diamond paste. This wears down the surface metal...the devices have an angled edge, larger on bottom than top. This means more polished the wider the devices become. I've noted spots on your pix, note the sharpness of detail on left coin, the tie is sharp, coat has more distinct deeper creases, more detail on hair. Coin on right shows loss of detail NOT caused by circulation wear. Check out this explanation diagram too. Nice eyes to catch that, I forsee an error hunter in the making!
